Other Packaging Methods

Individually Wrapped Items

Individually wrapped items are the most commonly used of all the frozen export packaging methods. Most frozen primals and offals prepared for export use this form of packaging. The wrap can expand and contract. Individually wrapping the items is simple, effective and hygienic. Although most individually wrapped items are covered by a single sheet of plastic film, it is common to vary this practice by using bags for convenience and to prevent the product from drying out.

Layer Packed Items

Although not as popular as the individual wrap method, layer packing the item provides an economical and convenient form of packaging. In most cases, the method of layer packing the item requires a single sheet of plastic film to be placed over one layer of the item(s).

Bulk Packed Items

Bulk packs are the most economical and simple of all the packaging types. This type of pack is popular for frozen product that is to be used in the manufacturing sector, due to the ease with which it can be unpacked.

Modified Atmosphere Packaging

Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) is used in preparing chilled lamb carcases to extend their preservation period. This is an extension of the vacuum packaging method. The lamb carcase is placed in a barrier bag and the atmosphere is replaced by carbon dioxide. The result is that aerobic microbes do not proliferate while anaerobic action continues, thereby tenderising the meat. This product has a preservation period of approximately 12 weeks.
